Riding On
One of the award-winning photos by Nancy Finke.

Nancy Finke wins photo competition

Nancy Finke, JNH executive adminstrative assistant, has won 1st place in the "Eye on the Sparrow - The World Within St. Louis" photography competition. Her photo/essay features Bonnie and Oliver Grueninger and their dedication to Jamestown New Horizons.
The black-and-white juried photography competition brings attention to the many extraordinary yet ordinary people who enrich our lives in the St. Louis region, according to Cecilia Nadal, executive director of Gitana Productions, a not-for-profit arts and education group in the St. Louis area. We couldn't agree more that Bonnie and Oliver fit that description!
Nancy has made photography her hobby since college. Her work will be exhibited in the lobby of St. Louis University Theatre, beginning May 21. Congratulations, Nancy!

Scott Bokal, World Traveller

Scott Bokal, World Traveller

JNH volunteer Scott Bokal, a former full-time member of USA Hockey's Officiating Development program with extensive officiating experience in the North American Hockey League, participated as an on ice official at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia in March. He worked the sledge ice hockey competition, which opened with teams participating from eight nations, including the United States and Canada. In sledge ice hockey, the participants with disabilities sit on sleds designed specifically for playing ice hockey. Players propel themselves with shortened hockey sticks. One end of the stick is modified to help players gain traction and speed on the ice while the other end has a blade for shooting.
This was Scott's second Paralympics, the first being the gold-medal game in the 2006 Paralympic Games in Torino, Italy. Scott has spent a number of seasons working at the collegiate, professional and international levels of ice hockey.
When he's not traveling the world to Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Canada, or Belarus, he volunteers at Jamestown New Horizons on Wednesday evenings, where he means the world to Brittany, Jonathan and Annie, helping them to have great fun riding their ponies. He also serves as the emcee at Jamestown New Horizons' annual dinner auction. He's a great teacher, a great referee, a great humanitarian. Scott's just plain great!

25th Annual Benefit Auction
JNH 25th auction a great success!

Jamestown New Horizons' 25th Annual Dinner Auction was a great success, bringing in over $23,000 to support this great program! Considering the economy, we are grateful indeed. Thanks to the hard-working JNH volunteers (8 were honored for 25 years of service),the generosity of the JNH donors, and some generous bidders at the auction, once again JNH came through with flying colors. Everyone agreed that Rob Weiman and Scott Bokal made a great new Auctioneer/MC team and worked beautifully together.
The Fund-A-Need raised $5,700 to help care for the JNH horses and ponies. Many thanks to Mary Jones who won the Stand Up for JNH game and immediately donated her winnings back to JNH. Tony and Paula Marino provided a delicious dinner (as always), and the huge, beautiful cake provided by Dorothy Walker was fantastic. Everyone enjoyed the six drawings for bottles of wine provided by Jan Kennedy throughout the evening. Bill Reichhardt of Missouri Beverage kept everyone happy by providing the wines, spirits and set-ups for the open bar. Steve Perrine, auction chairman, came through with unique items, as always. We missed Chris Basler and his busload of Friends from Columbia, Illinois, but look forward to having them back this year...

JNH Garden of the Month
JNH hillside garden named "Garden of the Month" by The Gardeners of Florissant.

Volunteer spirit "blooms" at JNH
The Gardeners of Florissant selected Jamestown New Horizons' hillside near the barn as their Garden of the Month. The hillside was quite beautiful this summer with all the bushes, perennials and annuals in full bloom.
The Gardeners of Florissant named Bonnie and Oliver Grueninger honorary members at their Christmas party. They are a lovely group of people who have helped Jamestown New Horizons a great deal during the past two years.
Three of their members, Gina Jasper, Judy Plischke and Marge Purgahn, volunteer at JNH. Many of their members have shown support by helping with the garden, by making donations and by attending the JNH auction. Thank you all so very much!

Terry Anzalone, volunteer extraordinaire! More Good News!

Terry Anzalone receives Community Service Award

Jamestown New Horizons volunteer, Terry Anzalone, was honored by Commerce Bank with their Community Service Award. The award was presented during a special luncheon at the Norwood Hills Country Club, hosted by David G. Cosby, Senior Vice President, Commerce Bank.
In honor of Terry, the William T. Kemper and Commerce Bancshares foundations awarded a joint grant to Jamestown New Horizons. Thank you so much!
The Commerce Bank Community Service Award is dedicated to recognizing those individuals who work diligently toward community betterment and the enhancement of the lives of others. Persons receiving this award have made outstanding contributions to organizations that serve the needs of our regions. Terry fits this description exactly.
Terry is truly an incredible person and has been a volunteer at JNH for over 18 years. She is one of the founding members and served as Executive Director for two years. Besides volunteering with the student lessons, she continues to serve on the JNH Board and is involved in event planning and fundraising. She is typical of many of the JNH volunteers who devote so much time, energy and talent to make JNH possible. JNH values every single one of its volunteers and the depth they give to the program. Terry represents all of the JNH volunteers by receiving this award. Congratulations, Terry!

Freedom Arena
The JNH Freedom Arena
The long-time dream of an indoor arena for the JNH students became a reality through the generosity and hard work of many people.
"Thank You" Rick Werner. He and his wife, Lynn, donated a new washer and dryer for the arena's laundry room. "Thank You" John Grueninger and Ryan Taylor. They donated and installed the sound system. And a big "Thank You!" goes out to all those who responded to our Pledge Drive.
We hardly realized just how wonderful it would be to have an indoor riding arena when we first started the Pledge Drive. All told, we raised over $150,000 for the project over a ten year period.
We were used to battling the cold and wind, especially during the March evening classes, but weather is no longer a problem. All are snug and cozy in the Freedom Arena. And now - during the summer sessions - we simply open wide the four huge ventilation doors and students ride in comfort and can still see the pond, pasture and wildlife. Yes, life is good in the JNH Freedom Arena!

Cowboy Woody visits JNH!
Cowgirl Jessie and Cowboy Woody visit with JNH's own Oliver and Bonnie Grueninger.

Woody's Roundup!
The Disney on Ice Toy Story 2 skaters, including Cowboy Woody and Cowgirl Jessie, made a special visit to JNH on Tuesday afternoon, March 12, 2002.
The JNH kids, as well as some of us adults, were in awe of the magnificent 7 foot tall Cowboy Woody and his friend Cowgirl Jessie! Our friends at the Savvis Center put forth a lot of effort to create this very special event for the JNH riders. They even brought along 3 cowgirls to teach the riders how to use a lasso!
Each of the kids received a Cowboy Woody Cowboy Camp certificate, a Cowboy Woody hat, a program and four tickets to the Disney on Ice Toy Story 2 show at the Savvis Center in St. Louis.
Cowboy Woody is the rootinist, tootinist, hootinist cowboy in the wild, wild west. We love ya, Woody! Click for more photos.
